How It's Made

Each face is an original which I model in wet clay and then cast with plaster and rebuild with papier-mâché and paper clay, adding bones, twigs, pods and other found organic components, carefully adhering with archival glue.

Below are various stages of the process of making the Seeker.

When a mask is complete,  I apply several coats of acrylic gel medium to the natural materials to help preserve them. The sculpture then can be handled, but very carefully.

  • Initial face in modeled clay

  • Surface added to shell, clay removed

  • Usually I start with the eyes

  • Her skin texture being applied

  • Playing with ideas for the fiery hair

  • Forehead defined, collar unfinished

  • Completed and photographed
